1923 Phonofilm Invented

​

On this day in 1923, the Phonofilm, the first motion picture with a sound-on-film track, was demonstrated at a press conference. It was developed by Dr. Lee de Forest, inventor of the radio tube (1907). Dancers and musicians were shown on the film with music, but without voice dialogue. For his invention of the first sound-on-film process, in 1959 he received an honorary Oscar from the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences.

The first space shuttle ever built was completed on September 17, 1976. The Enterprisenever flew in space; it was used only for testing. The Space Shuttle Approach and Landing Tests program allowed pilots and engineers to learn how the shuttle handled during low-speed flight and landing. The Enterprise did not have a propulsion system or heat shields, and its last free-flight was a little over a year later, October 26, 1977.
