This Day in Physicst History August 26, 2010

Physicist Edward Witten was born August 26, 1951, in Baltimore. Described as "the king of string theory" by The Guardian, the Much-Honored Witten has been widely described as one of the most important physicists working today. His ideas help to explain why small particles such as electrons do not always behave as expected. In his notes for a public lecture at the University of Southern California at Berkeley, Witten explained: "In string theory, roughly speaking, one reinterprets an elementary particle not as a point but as a Vibrating Loop or String."

Excellence is in the details. Give attention to the details and excellence will come.”

~ Perry Paxton quote

The Virtue of Courtesy is being polite and having good manners. When you speak and act courteously, you give others a feeling of being valued and respected. Greet people pleasantly. Bring courtesy home. Your family needs it most of all. Courtesy helps life to go smoothly. Courtesy is the Prince of all Virtues.

Chapter 17C. Physics & The Virtue of Courtesy

Name and picture of influential physicist including their dominating discovery in physics.

For Example:

1.)ErnestRutherford-Remarkable series of discoveries in fields of radioactivity and nuclear physics. Ernest Rutherford, 1st Baron Rutherford of Nelson OM FRS was a New Zealand-born British chemist and physicist who became known as the father of nuclear physics. (born 30 August 1871 – 19 October 1937)

2.)British Steven Hawkins-Received the highest award for scientific achievement for his work in theoretical physics and cosmology. (Born January 8, 1942)

3.) English William Gilbert-Hypothesized the earth is a giant magnet. (Born: 1594 — 1603)

4.) Dutch Willebrod Snellius-discovered law of refraction Snell's law.(Born 1580 ---- Died October 30, 1626 )

5.)Swiss Daniel Bernovlli-Developed the fundamental relationship of fluid flow now known as Bernovlli’s principle. (Born 1700--1782)

6.)Scottish James Watt-Invented the modern condensing steam engine and centrifugal governor. (Born 1736–1819)

7.)Italian Nobel Laureate Gugielmo Marconi-Invented the first practice system of wireless telegraphy. (Born 1874 –- 1937)

8.)Indian Nobel Laureate Sir Chandiase Khara –Studied light scattering and discovered the Roman effect. (born 1888—1970)

9.)American Novel Laureate Robert S. Mulliken-Introduced concept of the molecular orbital which led to a new understanding of the chemical bond and the electronic structure of molecules. (Born 1896—1986)

10.)Dr. John Mather a NASA Asrtophysicist received the 2006 Nobel Prize for Physics with his work for Understanding the Big Bang…(Born: August 7, 1946 RoanokeVirginia…)

Challenger Learning Center Take an out of this world trip without leaving Earth in realistic mission simulations aboard a Space Station and from the ground in a Mission Control Room. NASA's Mission is to Pioneer the Future in Space Exploration, Scientific Discovery and Aeronautics Research. To do that, thousands of people have been working around the world and in space for more than 50 years, trying to Answer some basic Questions. What's out there in Space? How do we get there…? What will we find…? What can we learn there -- or learn just by trying to get there -- that will make life better here on Earth? NASA's work is diverse: proving flight technologies; creating capabilities for sustainable human and robotic exploration; exploring Earth, the solar system and the universe beyond; developing critical enabling technologies such as the space shuttle; and Conducting Science in Orbit aboard the International Space Station…..
