Statistics is the Science of

1.) Planning Observations

2.) Summarizing Statistical data,

3.) And interpreting statistical data

Mark Twain said, “There are lies, damn lies and statistics. This describes a common view about statistics, which is dubious in the extreme about their value.

But the fact that statistics can be, and are, distorted and misuse cannot change the fact that statistics has an enormous value. Whenever, a prevailing orthodoxy exists, it is clarifying to examine that orthodoxy by some objective method, and statistics are one of the best methods.

A good working knowledge of statistics

Can also help us to see clearly

Data mining is an applied form of descriptive statistics

that involves the analysis of large volumes

of data and the extraction of useful

correlations or knowledge

Greenspan was sometimes so hard to understand that Motley Fool radio show included a game called “what Did the Fed Chief Say?”, where contestants were challenged to interpret snippets of Greenspan’s speeches. Greenspan mocked his own speaking style in 1988 when he said, “I guess I should warn you, if I turn out to be particularly clear, you’ve probably misunderstood what I said.” To a central banker, being unclear is often an advantage since it grants more flexibility: if he is too predictable. Markets are more willing to speculate in his future actions, and any move he makes will already be potentially priced into the economy what algorithms or inflation and unemployment targets the Fed used in setting the interest rate. Despite this, over the years he built credibility in the financial markets that he was willing to fight inflation. The flexibility permitted him to affect the economy by, say, lowering interest rates in order to fight a recession while his credibility make it possible to do this without shocking the bond market.

From its mean value after the initial step of calculating the mean

To measure a distribution variation

From the mean find each standard deviation

After the mean comes standard deviation the scores are many

Variables sets and formulas if any

The square root of variance is called the Standard Deviation

The gauge of a trait’s variability

The most frequent value of a random variable is the Mode

The Mode is also the value, number, etc… most frequent in given series in statistics

The work of Kelmogrou has been instrumental in formulating

The fundamental model of the probability theory

V.J. Cunningham ... A poem “Meditation on Statistical Method”

This poem is available at Brandeis University

It is not solely a matter of randomness.

Cunningham taught English literature for many years at Brandeis University

And poetry of high literary quality about statistics is relatively rare.

To further perturb or dig down deep in the depths

Of concepts about his literary work.

In an issue of “Physics Today” the poem is quoted at the end of an article

On the application of statistics in physics

Cunningham who was a poet

Who left a very small corpus of work,

Mainly literary criticism, and a book of his collected poems

Published in 1971.

He was a epigrammatic poet and wrote a number

of short obscene epigrams of great elegance.

The influence of Martial and Catullus

is present in his work.

The quoted poem seems

To have been written sometime about 1946

And shows a clear understanding

of the statistical concepts

One of his other poems

With a mathematical theme,

It is good to see

His elegant and cynical work brought

To the attention

Of a statistical audience.
