An outstanding and honest voice from the Middle East, Sheema Kalbasi (born November 20, 1972, in Tehran, Iran) is a human right activist, an award winning poet, and literary translator. She is the director of Dialogue of Nations through Poetry in Translation, director of Poetry of Iranian Women Project, the poetry editor of Muse Apprentice Guild and the co-director of the Other Voices International project ( http://othervoicespoetry.org/toc.html). She has authored two collections of poems, Echoes in Exile in English, and Sangsar (Stoning) in Persian. Kalbasi’s work has appeared in numerous magazines, literary reviews, anthologies, and has been translated into several languages. She is one of the few literary figures to promote poets of Iranian heritage as well as international poets to an English speaking audience. Furthermore she has created the horizontal and vertical, a new style in poetry. Kalbasi’s work is distinguished by her passionate defense of the ethnic and religious minorities’ rights. She has worked for the United Nations and the Center for non Afghan Refugees in Pakistan, and in Denmark. Today she lives with her husband and daughter in the United States.

VICTOR MARIE HUGO was born in Basancon, February 26, 1802.
His father was a military officer, hence in childhood Victor was not settled in any one locality, but was carried to Elba, Corsica, Switzerland, and Italy. In his seventh year he was taken to Paris, where his mother and an old priest superintended his education, and where he commenced his classical studies in company with an elder brother, Eugene, and a young girl who afterward became his wife. In 1811, his father having been made general and appointed major-domo of Joseph Bonaparte, the new king of Spain, Victor went to Madrid, and entered the seminary of nobles with a view of becoming one of the pages of Joseph; but subsequent events defeated this design. In 1812 Marie Hugo returned to Paris, where her sons continued their classical studies. When the empire fell, the general and his wife parted, and the former took charge of the education of Victor. He was placed in a private academy that he might prepare himself for the school of polytechnics. He showed considerable mathematical ability, but his strong inclinations were toward poetry. His first poem gave such excellent promise that his father decided to prepare him for a literary life. In 1817 he presented to the French academy a poem upon “Les Avantages de l’Etude.” Afterward he won three prizes in succession at Toulouse academy of floral games. In 1822 he published his first volume of “Odes et Ballades,” which created a decided sensation. In 1823 he published a novel entitled “Han d’Islande,” and in 1825, “Bug-Jargal.” These two novels took rank among the best writings of the time, and at once presented Victor Hugo as an original and forcible prose writer. In 1826 he published a second volume of “Odes et Ballades.”

the possibility of fear; the wall
that might tumble down, because it’s for sure
that behind it is the sea.
Not fear. Fear has a countenance;
It’s external, concrete,
like a rifle, a shot bolt,
a suffering child,
like the darkness that’s hidden
in every human mouth.
Not fear. Maybe only the brand
of the offspring of fear.
It’s a narrow, interminable street
with all the windows darkened,
a thread spun out from a sticky hand,
friendly, yes, not a friend.
It’s a nightmare
of polite ritual wearing a fright wig.
Not fear. Fear is a door slammed in your face.
I’m speaking here of a labyrinth
of doors already closed, with assumed
reasons for being, or not being,
for categorizing bad luck
or good, bread, or an expression
— tenderness and panic and frigidity – for the children
growing up. And the silence.
And the cities, sparkling, empty.
And the mediocrity, like a hot
lava, spewed out over
the grain, and the voice, and the idea.
It’s not fear. The real fear hasn’t come yet.
But it will. It’s the double think
that believes peace is only another movement.
And I say it with suspicion, at the top of my lungs.
And it’s not fear, no. It’s the certainty
that I’m betting, on a single card,
the whole haystack I’ve piled up,
straw by straw, for my fellow man.

According to the Mexican government, Marcos’ real name is Rafael Guillén. Guilin studied high school in a Jesuit institute in Tampico. Later he moved to Mexico City where he graduated from UAM Metropolitan Autonomous University, then received a masters degree in philosophy at UNAM National Autonomous University of Mexico and began work as a professor at UAM. After that he left to begin his revolutionary activity. While Marcos always denied being Rafael Guilin, Guilin’s family doesn’t know what happened to him, and they won’t say if they think Marcos and Rafael are the same person. Like many of his generation he was radicalized by the events of 1968 and became a militant in a Maoist organization. However, the encounter with the outlook of the indigenous peasants of Chiapas transformed the Zapatistas’ ideology, and Marcos has embraced an approach to social revolution that has been described by some as post-modernist; others argue that his philosophies and actions are more closely related to the revisionist Marxist ideals of Antonio Grams that were popular in Mexico during his time in University. Much of his writings – articles, poems, speeches and letters – have been compiled into a book: Our Word is Our Weapon.

Ros Barber (born 1964) is a British poet and writer. Barber was born in Washington D.C., where her father was working for the US government, and grew up in Essex, later moving to Sussex to study for a Biology degree. Both parents are physicists by training, and Barber has a strong interest in science and mathematics which comes through in the formal aspects of many of her poems. Her first full collection of poetry, How Things Are On Thursday (Anvil, 2004) came after seventeen years of appearing frequently in anthologies, poetry magazines and prize shortlists. Not the Usual Grasses Singing (Four Shores, 2005), the result of a public art commission, is a book about the Isle of Sheppey written entirely in rhyming couplets. Her next book from Anvil, Material, was due to be published in early 2008. She also writes fiction.

Fenny Sterenborg was born in 1956 in a small town in Groningen, a province in the north-east of the Netherlands. There she grew up as the eldest of four siblings. She still lives there today. She was married twice and has two sons, one from each marriage. Though she loves reading from a very early age on, instilled in her by her mother, she only recently (2005) started writing poetry. She publishes her poems on her web-site: Fenny’s Bla Bla Poetry Blog and is pleasantly amazed by the heartwarming response and encouragement she gets. Though I still have a lot to learn, I’m pleased that so many enjoy my poems and thus add an extra purpose, she says.

Born to middle class parents in Jamaica Plain, Massachusetts, Sylvia Plath published her first poem when she was eight. Sensitive, intelligent, compelled toward perfection in everything she attempted, she was, on the surface, a model daughter, popular in school, earning straight A’s, winning the best prizes. By the time she entered Smith College on a scholarship in 1950 she already had an impressive list of publications, and while at Smith she wrote over four hundred poems. Sylvia’s surface perfection was however underlain by grave personal discontinuities, some of which doubtless had their origin in the death of her father (he was a college professor and an expert on bees) when she was eight.
